Volcano inside a lake (Location: Taal, Philippines)

Taal Volcano about 50 km from Manila is an interesting day trip. It takes about 3 hrs including one slow bus ride, some 10 km in a tricycle / jeepney and a wet boat ride to get there. Then there is a 30-minute sweaty climb to the summit (or a horse ride for the lazy ones) and you a rewarded with stunning views.

Basically there is a big fresh water lake with numerous islands and mountains. One of the mountains is an active volcano called Taal. Interestingly there is another (volcanic) lake inside the volcano and some hot springs around it. The scenery reminds me of Iceland somehow. It could have been possible to descend to the crater but that would have required several hours of time and a guide. Anyway the best part was the views from the summit!

There were also some nice and quiet looking guest houses near the beachfront of the lake, might have been a good idea to stay overnight there? Anyway this was a good day trip. During the bus ride I saw some of the dodgiest and dirtiest areas of Manila, not the kind of neighbourhood that you would like to visit after dark... And it was sad to see how dirty Manila Bay was in that area.
